This class is for teens who want to design their own website. This course is a hands-on project, so it is best if participants have a purpose in mind, such as a blog, portfolio site, e-commerce or want a platform to promote podcasts or YouTube channel. Students will learn to create web graphics and images using online tools, and design and build a site using the open-source WordPress platform. We will emphasize design rather than coding and use a drag-and-drop page builder, though an introduction to HTML and CSS will be provided. We will go into more depth with coding in part 2 of this class in Fall 2022. An intro to security, maintenance and best-practices will also be covered. Students will need to bring their own laptop or Chromebook and have an email address that is not on a closed school network. To get the most from this class, teens should plan to spend 2-4 hours per week outside of class working on their website.
One year of web hosting will be provided on a WordPress multi-user setup. Parents will have the option to be provided with an administrator account to their teens website and Dream Maker Creative will hold super-administrator privileges to all student sites while hosted on our server. If your teen locks you out or is posting content you feel is inappropriate, you can contact us to reinstate your access, remove certain content, or shut the site down. You may migrate the website to your own hosting at any time. Instructions will be provided,
but this will not be covered in class. This class will be led by Sara Smith, owner of Dream Maker Creative, and also a professional web designer.
