This beginning music course is for the homeschooled child with little or no previous experience playing or reading music. In this fun and upbeat class, we will introduce your child to playing the soprano recorder. Playing the recorder is something of a rite of passage for public school students around grade 4 as a warm-up for later instrumental music instruction. The recorder is ideal for early music because it’s lightweight, mostly non destructible, intuitive to play, and relatively easy for children to learn. Plus it fosters listening and aural skills, hand-eye coordination, music appreciation, and perseverance. But teaching music can be challenging for homeschool parents who lack the background or interest. That’s where we come in.
In addition to playing recorder, your child will learn musical notation, listening skills, different rhythms, and musical vocabulary. Instruction will be delivered via engaging video lessons, kid friendly worksheets and sheet music, group “jams”, and the guidance of an in-person teacher/mentor. While your child could learn to play at home, this collaborative and social music class will give your child the experience of playing in a group.
Your enrollment includes a recorder to keep, though you may wish to purchase an extra for home if you’re likely to forget to bring it back each week (practice at home is encouraged). We will have some extras available for purchase (under $10). Recorders will not be shared and students will be separated from each other to reduce spread of germs through blowing. If you prefer your child to wear a mask in class, please purchase a mask designed for playing wind instruments such as these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08H5WL2FW.
