If you love vibrant colors, you’ll love ice dyeing. This method for dyeing combines elements of tie-dye, shibori, and clever techniques for manipulating how and where color spreads. We’ll talk about dye splits and color combinations, rack versus muck dyeing, dry or wet dyeing, rinsing, laundering and care. And we’ll explore some common patterns such as spirals, geodes, and stripes along with the beauty and surprise of random sprinkling. Your class fee will include 3 tea towels or bandanas and you may bring 2 cotton items of your own such as shirts, pillow cases, etc. (please limit to max 36″). The dyes we’re using are not suitable for synthetic fibers or silk. We also have a variety of cotton canvas tote bags, zippered pillow covers, placemats, table runners, extra tea towels and more for additional cost. Ice dyeing requires time for the ice to melt and timing can depend on the day’s temperature and how vibrant you want your colors. As such, you will take your dye bundles home to continue batching and to rinse (likely the next day). Please bring a large plastic tub with lid (something along these lines or larger: https://tinyurl.com/2h66b576), to bring your ice bowls home without them splashing around in the trunk of your car. If you are car-pooling, please plan for space for these. This class is for ages 12 to adult, but minors must attend with an adult. Do you love the boldness and beauty of hand dyed fabrics? But maybe you’ve tried it and found it to be overly involved and messy. In this workshop, we’ll present a dye method that is fast, low fuss and offers tons of flexibility. You’ll have the freedom to create stunning designs using classic binding and resist methods or explore a more fluid “watercolor” style. Additionally, you’ll have the chance to make sun prints and try out liquid resist simulating batik style. We will demonstrate a number of design strategies, discuss color choices, cover process and materials, then set you free to create. Your class fee includes 2 large plain bandanas (1 each silk and cotton). Additionally, you may bring 2 light colored items to dye such as a shirt, tote bag, pillow case, etc. Please do not bring large items. We will also have a variety of dyeables available for additional cost such as aprons, tea towels, tote bags and more. Prepaid ticket required to hold your spot. Ages 10+ may participate with adult attendee (both must be ticketed). Learn to create a handmade hardbound journal with cardboard, cord and beautiful paper. After you assemble the cover, you’ll learn simple bookbinding techniques to attach a stack of thick, unlined paper to the cover using the Coptic binding method. Paper hoarders will love this craft, as your stash will provide a never-ending variety of bookbinding possibilities. You get to raid our paper stash for this class or you may bring 2 sheets of coordinating 12×12 card stock. Finished journals measure 5 inches by 7 inches and will hold up to 60 sheets. These are great as notebooks, sketchbooks and more. We will talk about other binding techniques, tools, etc. though the methods are vast. But you’ll walk away with the skills to get started with this rewarding hobby. This workshop will be held at Serve Nutrition, in Lakebay and is suitable for ages 12+ (minors must attend with adult). We will assemble and decorate a windchime featuring 4-6 aluminum tubes with wood pieces and weather resistant cord. Chimes measure half-inch diameter by 7-10 inch long with the complete height about 18-24 inches long. While creating a windchime “truly” from scratch requires wood working tools such as drills, saws, and reamers, we’re going to cheat a bit and start from commercial parts. This allows us to focus on creating a custom artsy piece that still sounds great, using paints, beads, wood pieces and charms. You’ll learn how to string chimes plus learn about the parts – allowing you to repair a windchime on your own or upcycle to bring new life to an old chime. And we’ll talk briefly about the physics of wind chimes (ever so briefly … we’re here for the art, not the science!). And you’ll learn where to go if you want to dive in deeper to this hobby. This workshop is for ages 12 to adult, but minors must attend with an adult. Join us to create a charming 6 pane mini window, adorned with chicken wire and sparkly beads that you add. You’ll learn to use some basic jewelry tools while choosing from a variety of beads chosen to best capture the sunlight. Your window measures roughly 11 x 15 inches and will have the chicken wire cut and attached ahead of time, so that you can focus on the fun part. This workshop will be held at Two Foxes Winery on the Key Peninsula. Come enjoy their lovely garden and try a wine tasting flight or glass of one of their featured wines (not included in ticket). Non-alcoholic beverages available. Food is limited, but you may bring your own. Ages 21+ for this event, please.
